I happened along this young ladies site one day not long ago, and looke it over and liked what she had to present. Using something basic like apples she explains how like red and green apples being or having, are ending up disabled in any way is a natural part of being human. This is not saying it is easy or fun to be disabled, just that we would all be better off learning to work with what abilites we have, and make them stronger.
I initially contacted Kathie the site owner, author and cool person on how to get started in writing. She was kind enough to help me out a little. Nothing major, just kind words and some pointers was it. But, for someone like her who must be very busy, and on the go... Took time to reply to me.
Here is a tiny blurb from her site:
Learn more about Disability is Natural: Revolutionary Common Sense for Raising Successful Children with Disabilities/2nd Edition, Kathie Snow's book that's changing the lives of children with disabilities and their families! But it's not just for parents—service providers, educators, people with disabilities, professionals of all kinds, and universities also enthusiastically rave about this one-of-a-kind manual for ensuring children with disabilities lead real lives—self-determined lives—included in their homes, schools, and communities!
I wish that she was around with this information when my little brother and I where growing up... Not for my dad to use, as he did not want my brother aware of anything, so that my dad could steal my bothers trust fund when my brother turned 18. I would have used it to teach my brother even more than what I tried to do as his big brother. He was severely autisctic, no name for it at the time, other than everyone from the Dr's on down the line sticking the label Mentally Retarded on him...
Well Dr's today: He has built his own PC from the ground up, plays chess as a ranked player in the world, gives everyone he plays his online games with a go for there money, and he lives on his own un-assisted, and holds a part time job. He lives over 3 thousand miles from me, and we last saw each other 14 years ago now.
Granted I could not stop my dad from stealing my brithers money, I tried. The judge told me that my brother being 18 was able to decide what he wants to do with his money... sigh...
Imagine if I had a tool like Disability is Natural to help me back then... Well now I hope to spread the ability of a tool and tools like this to help more people stuck in the same boat as I was, and for parents who actually care, and want the best for a son or daughter with a disability.
