Having a Spinal Cord Injury is a club that no one chooses to belong to. There are an estimated 650,000 members in the United States today, with an average of 11,000 new injuries every year.
Until recently, there has been very little hope of recovery. Rehabilitation has been focused on getting those with a spinal cord injury to accept and become familiar with their new life in a wheelchair. According to research by Dr. John McDonald and Dr. Wise Young, an exercise based program is essential for recovery. Dr. Young who is a leader in the spinal cord injury recovery field states:
